Automation Will Disrupt Our World (Andrew Yang, The Hill, #30Mil4Yang)

As L.A. ports automate, ILWU union protests but truckers cheer

Walter Diaz, an immigrant truck driver from El Salvador, steers his 18-wheeler toward the giant ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Notably, throughout the four-month uproar, the ports’ 13,000 truckers were all but absent from the debate. There, truckers celebrate automation and rail against dockworkers and city politicians. Both now have the shortest cargo turn times at the ports, less than half those of Maersk’s APM. Truckers wait in line to fetch containers at Maersk’s APM terminal at the Port of Los Angeles.

For the 200,000 U.S. businesses importing goods through the San Pedro Bay ports – from such giants as Walmart and Apple to small factories and neighborhood stores – the speed with which their cargo moves from ships to trucks or trains, and on to consumers, is crucial. Weston LaBar, chief executive of the Harbor Trucking Assn., sees drivers increasingly using app-based systems to decline pickups at crowded terminals, while scooping up opportunities at automated facilities. To be sure, the truckers make more money by moving loads faster. As for dockworkers’ lunch and rest breaks, truckers would not object if they too were union members, entitled to similar privileges, ILWU officials contend.

Global forces are shaping the debate over automation, and the tensions among truckers, dockworkers and terminal operators. In the past, truckers picked up full containers, dropping off empty ones at the same terminal. Truckers now navigate 26 miles of road to pick up cargo inside Maersk’s APM Terminal at the Port of Los Angeles. ILWU officials argue that truckers will also be harmed by automation.

Automation Empire on Steam

About This Game Automation Empire is a simulation / management game all about efficiency and expansion. Start with nothing, and build up a massive interconnected industrial network of factories and machines. Economical transportation of resources will be essential to your success as an automation-engineer. Utilize every tool you have access to, including mine carts, drones. Employ your ingenuity and creativity to plan out an efficient logistics network of machines to form a mechanical superorganism of production.

DESIGN COMPLEX SYSTEMSHarness your creativity to engineer a beautiful machine of clockwork precision. Extract and process precious metals and ores from the ground including gold, iron, and coal. Craft and refine your resources into more valuable products through the use of an optimized factory production-line. RESEARCH NEW TECHNOLOGYUpgrade your facility’s infrastructure as you discover new technologies by harnessing the power of the resources you extract. Throughout your engineering endeavors you’ll gain access to advanced automated machines and systems which will further compound your production capacity.

INTEGRATE WITH YOUR SURROUNDINGSWork around your planet’s naturally occurring geological formations and rough terrain as you integrate your ever expanding industrial systems. Seven different planets, with differing biomes, each present unique landforms you must factor into your base’s layout.

Automate at Stardew Valley Nexus

Place a chest next to a machine, and the machine will automatically pull raw items from the chest and push processed items into it. Connect multiple machines with a chest to link them. Put a chest next to any number of machines, and they’ll take raw items from the chest and push their finished items into it. Pairs well with…Basic automationPlace a chest next to a crafting machine to connect it. Machines connected to a chest will push their output into it, and pull ingredients to process out of it.

You can also automate greenhouse crops, indoor pots, animal produce, and forage by installing Deluxe Auto-Grabber and connecting a chest to its auto-grabber. Machine groupsYou can connect any number of chests and machines into a ‘machine group’, just by placing each chest/machine so it’s touching another one. If you add multiple chests to the same machine group, they’ll all be used in the automation. Chests edited using Chests Anywhere to enable ‘prefer this chest for output’;. Chests which already contain an item of the same type;.

ConnectorsYou can optionally configure objects or paths as connectors, which link machines together. Automate can support custom machines and containers if you create an IAutomationFactory for them.

Automating workflows can give time back to human thinking Automation Maturity

This Economist Intelligence Unit report, sponsored by UiPath, explores the current and likely future progress of automation in organisations based on a survey of 502 executives conducted in May 2019. The respondents hail from eight countries-Canada, France, Germany, India, Japan, Singapore, the UK and the US. While automation was once a term associated exclusively with manufacturing, today, after three decades of advances in digital technology, there are few fields of organisational activity left untouched by it. Businesses in every industry are using software to automate the processes that guide their daily operations as they seek the efficiencies that come from replacing manual tasks with machine-operated ones. Read the report to uncover how its usage is accelerating and widening to create opportunities for business growth, and to encourage greater creativity and innovation from employees.

Configuring automation for project boards

You can set up automatic workflows to move issues and pull requests to a project board column when a specified event occurs. To set up automatic workflows for a repository project board, you must have write access to the repository. Organization owners and members can configure automatic workflows on an organization-wide project board. You can use a project board template to create a project board with automation already configured. When you close a project board, any workflow automation configured for the project board will pause.

If you reopen a project board, you have the option to sync automation, which updates the positon of the cards on the board according to the automation settings configured for the board. Using the Preset drop-down menu, select an automation preset. Select the workflow automations you want to configure for the column.
