NDSU Student-Athletes Volunteer at FargoMania Hosted by TNT Kid's Fitness

OSF Children’s Hospital

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Almost Home Kids. Individual volunteers, volunteer groups and the community make a huge difference at Almost Home Kids. Our volunteers are an integral part of the daily functions, providing a better quality of life for the children and families we serve. Recreational volunteers – These volunteers engage the children with play activities such as reading, puzzles, sensory toys or holding a baby. Facility volunteers – These volunteers help with outside yard work or decorating for the holidays.

To be a recreational volunteer, Almost Homes Kids require a commitment of a minimum of four volunteer hours every month for the four-month time period following orientation. Shifts are available seven days a week and volunteers can choose their own one- to two-hour shifts based on availability. Volunteers need to complete an online application and then they will be invited to register and attend the next available monthly orientation. Volunteers need to be able to commit to a minimum of four hours per month in the four-month time period following orientation. If you are volunteering to meet a class requirement or are a Service Learning Student, the process is the same and you must attend an orientation.

The first step to becoming a volunteer is to complete the online New Volunteer Application Form. Once your application is approved and you have confirmed your documentation is up to date for your TB and flu, you will be invited by email, to register for the next available volunteer orientation.

Volunteering at Comer Children’s Hospital

At the University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital, our volunteers are true stars – exceptional individuals who take the extra steps that make a difference in another person’s life. Through deeds large and small, volunteers help patients and their families feel better during difficult times. Most volunteers say that the personal fulfillment that comes from helping another person is their greatest reward. Other volunteers look forward to the new friendships and camaraderie they share with fellow volunteers. To become a volunteer, your first step is to submit an application.

We will contact you within 30 business days of receiving your application to set up an interview if a volunteer opportunity is available. Complete a volunteer application and begin your path to volunteering. Volunteers must be willing to receive an annual tuberculosis test and influenza vaccination and need to commit to four hours of service per week. Volunteer candidates must complete an application and interview, and must pass health-screening tests for tuberculosis, measles, German measles, chickenpox and illegal drugs. Volunteers do not take the place of salaried staff at the Comer Children’s Hospital.

Volunteer service is not intended in any way to lead to paid employment. The following are a few examples of our volunteer program opportunities at the UChicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital.

Equi-Kids Therapeutic Riding Program

The inspirational dedication and devotion of our EQUI-KIDS volunteers enable us to deliver our mission every day and we are grateful for each and every one of our volunteers who selflessly offer their service to support our therapeutic riding program. With more than 300 volunteers delivering 14,000 hours of service, our program offers numerous ways that you can help. Sidewalkers help groom and tack the horses before the lesson and are needed to walk beside the horse in lessons to provide physical and emotional support to the rider. Sidewalkers partner with their rider and the Instructor to ensure the riders’ safety during the lesson. Horse Leaders help tack and groom the horses before the lesson.

Horse Leaders warm-up the horse before the lesson and lead the horse during the lesson. Horse Leaders partner with the horse, rider and the Instructor to ensure the rider’s safety during the lesson. Barn volunteers help with the program by assisting with cleaning stalls, cleaning the tack and equipment, helping with repairs around the farm. Administrative and Special Event volunteers are needed to serve on special events committee to help with fundraising events and assist with administrative projects in the office. Volunteers are also needed to help with greeting our riders and guests at the receptionist desk.

Be a CASA Volunteer

We are a national cause with more than 85,000 of the most dedicated volunteers out there. Court-appointed special advocate and guardian ad litem volunteers make a life-changing difference for children who have experienced abuse or neglect. Each volunteer is appointed by a judge to advocate for a child’s best interest in court. Our volunteers help judges develop a fuller picture of each child’s life. Their advocacy enables judges to make the most well-informed decision for each child.
