There are lots of ways you can get involved as a youth volunteer:Think about what you enjoy doing and find creative ways to use your skills and interests to help local agencies. For volunteers under 13 years of age, a Parent/guardian may create a team to include children under 13 on their account and then register team members for an opportunity. Click on the age of the youth interested in volunteering to view ALL suitable opportunities. Some opportunities for youth may require signup with an adult which requires the adult and youth to signup for, or express interest in, the opportunity as a team. Click on the age of the youth interested in volunteering to view suitable DATE & TIME SPECIFIC volunteer opportunities. 

It can be difficult to find posted volunteer opportunities for younger youth. It can be a challenge to find volunteer opportunities for families, especially with younger children. There are not many local agencies that welcome volunteers under the age of 12 on a regular basis. Often, it’s easier for an agency to welcome volunteer families or groups that approach them with ready-to-go project ideas that require very few resources from the agency itself. This camp for youth is a unique combination of recreational and volunteer experiences designed to give every child an opportunity to make new friends, have fun, and feel good about what they’re doing in the summertime.

Become a Volunteer

Most of the tutoring hour is spent reading to/with the child or listening to the child read. To make the best use of time and maintain focus, we ask that children only bring homework they have questions about. Teacher liasons are present on-site to assist during tutoring time. Teacher liasons realize that not all tutors are equipped to work with students with learning or beheavioral disabilities. Through educational consultation and guidance, teacher liasons can help tutors gain a better understanding of how to match individual learning styles. 

Whiz Kids provides two different permission slips that the school gives to parents: one for the tutorial component, the other for Club Time. Club Time is moral and character-based guidance in a simple, visual and developmentally appropriate way. During Club Time, coordinators and teachers meet with half the tutors for training and planning. The following week, coordinators and teachers meet with the other half. Over time, the tutor learns of the child’s specific academic, physical and spiritual needs, allowing for more focused and individualized academic time. 

Our coordinators set up and manage the sessions, keep track of paperwork, communicate with the teachers and schools and record of attendance. Teacher liasons are here to answer any questions you may have, serving as an educational consultant and a go-between for the student’s teacher. Club Leaders teach the Novo Ministries curriculum during club time preceding tutoring time.

10 Places to Volunteer with Kids in Omaha

It is always a good idea to contact the agency before planning to volunteer to verify age requirements, complete the application process, or schedule a time in advance. I have volunteered here with my kids, and it is a wonderful organization! Families can sort clothes, help with the food pantry, and assist with special events. Volunteers must be ages 12 and older to serve at the pantry. Ages 12-15 must volunteer alongside a parent or group leader. 

There are many opportunities to volunteer or donate and give hope for Christmas to over 1,200 children in need. Food Preparation – School aged children are welcome to help at this family friendly event, as long as they are accompanied by an adult. Youth under the age of 16 must have their parent’s permission to ring and that under the age of 14 will have adult supervision while volunteering. Most locations welcome children ringing with adults. They offer an opportunity for volunteers of all ages to participate in a low impact, soft skills, one-time activity to create items that will bring joy to those who reside in the shelter. 

Provide a Meal Rainbow House – Families can volunteer to provide meals for children who are in the hospital. Provide a meal at Ronald McDonald House – During cold and flu season, volunteers under the age of 18 will not be permitted. Please limit the number of volunteers in your group to a maximum total of ten For the safety of our children, if anyone in your group is not feeling well, please have them stay home.

Hands On Greater Portland

Family Volunteering with Hands On Greater Portland Doing good shouldn’t just be for grown ups. That’s why we have developed a series of projects that are perfect for families with kids of all ages. While our Good for Kids! projects were developed specifically with familes in mind, there are lots of other projects that might be a good fit for your family so be sure to check out the project calendar to see what else is out there. From there, you can look at the project titles for specific age requirements. 

Note that for each project, the age in the minimum age reflected in the title may require adult accompaniment. Walk around your neighborhood knocking on doors collecting canned food. Then take the food to your local food bank or food collection site. A few of options: Oregon Food Bank or Sunshine Division. A couple organizations in need of supplies include: Join, Good Neighbor Center & Transition Projects. 

Meal Delivery: Teach your children the importance of helping those in need by bringing them along to drop off meals or food baskets to people who cannot easily leave their homes. Gardening/Tree Planting: Planting, weeding, and helping maintain school, community and public gardens around the city are great ways to get the family working together outside! Check out Zenger Farm or Portland Parks and Recreation. Kids’ Book Drive: Collect used children’s books at your school or church or neighborhood to donate to kids in the Greater Portland area who do not have access to books.
