Why This Teen Believes Every Kid Should Have a Birthday Party
Kid Friendly Volunteering Opportunities
How do we initiate opportunities for children and teens to devote their time, energy, and creativity toward making a difference in their local community? Finding a cause isn’t tough; scores of opportunities exist and organizations need socially conscious and motivated volunteers. Don’t forget, volunteering at an early age can create positive life behaviors. Children who volunteer are three times more likely to volunteer as adults. Memphis Botanic Garden – The garden thrives through the time and energy of their volunteers! MBG offers a variety of seasonal and year-round volunteer opportunities to suit your interests, skill level, and schedule. Memphis Zoo – The Memphis Zoo has various volunteering opportunities including interns, group volunteers, family volunteers, special event volunteers, general volunteers, and docents. These volunteering opportunities have different skills, time, and age requirements. National Civil Rights Museum – Volunteers are needed on the weekend as greeters and exhibit monitors from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. Responsibilities include assisting guests, directing groups, and providing Museum information with a friendly attitude. STS Enterprise Corporation – Designed to create volunteer opportunities for youth and college students to give back to the Memphis Community, STS is dedicated to cultivating wiser, more disciplined and productive young men and women. Students who volunteer are eligible for scholarship opportunities from the James H. Parke Memorial Youth Scholarship Award. YMCA of Memphis and the Mid-South – YMCA offers 3 volunteer programs specifically for youth. If none of these options tickle your fancy, head over to Volunteer Memphis or Volunteer Odyssey for customized volunteer recommendations. They provide access to opportunities that connect volunteers with schools, parks, and nonprofits that need your help.

Best Friends Animal Society
Does your child love animals? Want to introduce your kids to the world of animal welfare? Sign them up to become an official Best Friends Animal Society Junior Ambassador. Kids ages 8 to 13 can become junior ambassadors and get to know the fun side of saving animals’ lives. Junior ambassadors will learn about lifesaving tactics like spay/neuter, adoption, trap-neuter-return and more. Take part in a Best Friends grand Sanctuary tour or visit the Best Friends Visitor Center and learn more about homeless pets. Take the junior ambassador oath to help save the lives of homeless pets. Earn their own official junior ambassador badge, which lets everyone know how much they love animals. After kids become official junior ambassadors, they can take what they learned back to their communities and spread the word about Best Friends and homeless pets to everyone they know. Becoming a junior ambassador is free but requires registration. Volunteering is a great way to spend time with the animals at our Sanctuary and also make a difference in their lives. When supervised by a parent or guardian, kids can volunteer to help with cleaning, walking and caring for the animals. Kids under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult at all times while volunteering. For safety considerations, each animal area has its own minimum age requirements.
